Just couldn't get into this one
fantastic book
I like reading about bygone eras. Some of the stories in this book have interesting tidbits, so it does have some appeal, however biased wartime publications are always slanted. These stories are in English and reflect the bias of the English speaking countries who fought with the allies in world war one, which is to be expected. What I don't like is how these are more of the formal media, like newspaper articles, that are censored and cherry picked for wartime propaganda.
Reading about the English and Prussians nobly resisting the evil French dictatorial Republic under Napoleon Bonaparte then contrasting that with the evil barbaric Huns and noble French of the first world war, I only see glaring contradictions. Taking a more cynical view I still find biased personal accounts about the first world war interesting, because it is what they lived and felt. What I truly don't like is the whitewashed stories that have to conform to an agenda and leave out so much, a lot of substance is lost. The other aspect I hate is the blatant dehumanization of the central powers, one of the stories starts out with how kids playing sports don't like cheats and sneaks and then goes on to the obvious inference that the Germans are cheats and sneaks. Blatantly obvious ploys make for dull reading to someone not willing to swallow it up.
If you want newspaper snippets from world war one this has quite a few of them. If you are cynical like me you may find the reading tedious. Plenty of other books with more substance.

lives we lead today this book gives you a little more insight of a solders live a good book to read

this is a must read if you - like me - appreciate our Veterans and their stories.... These guys gave us a big part of their lives the least we can do is remeber them, what they gave, and what they earned for all of us - our freedom.
No real history here. Just hateful vilification of the other side. All sides did what they thought they had to do once their pride and foolishness started a stupid war.
